As a student Untidar, to be honest, I sometimes get tired every time I want to work together and end up going to a cafe. Not because the cafe is bad, but because the vibe is the same: coffee, coffee, coffee… and sometimes the menu is “bearish” if we want to eat for real. Well, a few days ago my friends and I were looking for a comfortable place to work, not far from the city of Magelang, and now I want to recommend Omah Kates Resto in Kaligoro to you. Why is it a recommendation for you?

Finally we decided to stop by Resto Omah Kates (Indonesian Cuisine). And it turns out… this is really suitable as a “sane” version of a place to do assignments—eat well, stomach full, work on the road.
Atmosphere: the 2nd floor is good for doing work
I chose to sit in 2nd floor, because it’s better for focusing. It feels calmer, not too crowded, and the tables are comfortable for placing laptops, books and chargers. For those with the type of assignment who need space, this is very important.
What I like is that the place is not the type that makes us feel like we are “waiting” to go home quickly. So if you want to discuss group assignments, make presentations, or just report in installments, the 2nd floor could be a safe spot.
And because this is a restaurant, the atmosphere is also different from a cafe. There are foods that are really “eating”, so our energy isn’t just supported by iced coffee and bread.
The reason I chose Omah Kates: not only coffee, but also a proper meal
Sometimes working together isn’t just about the place, but about the mood. If you are hungry from the start, in the end what is discussed is not the task – what is discussed is “what to eat after this”.
At Omah Kates, we can get things done:

The menu I reviewed: Bakmi Godok Jawa
If you need warm food that is comfortable on your stomach, I recommend it Bakmi Godok Jawa.
When it arrived, the aroma was immediately “very Javanese”—warm, savory, and lifted the mood. This is a type of boiled noodle that is suitable to be eaten slowly while typing or while discussing. The soup makes your body feel better, especially when you’re tired after class or practical work.
What I feel:
- it tastes delicious and not “dry”
- the portion is just right for lunch/afternoon
- suitable for those who want to be full but still light
For me, Bakmi Godok is a safe choice if you want to eat something that will make you focus. Not too spicy to make you feel sick, but still satisfying.
Second: Chicken Fried Kwetiaw
If any of your friends don’t like soup, or want a menu with more “kick” and taste, Chicken Fried Kwetiaw also worth it.
The fried kwetiaw is the type that is delicious to eat in a group because the aroma is tempting and the taste is delicious. There’s enough chicken, and the important thing: this is a menu that fills you up quickly.
What I like:
- suitable for those of you who want to eat heavily
- It doesn’t taste strange, so it’s safe for many people’s tastes
- delicious to eat while chatting in group work
Usually, when working together, a menu like this is a “savior”, because one table can focus again once the stomach is safe.
Additions to be inserted after the “first order” section
After menu 1 and 2 From the moment the first order arrived, we initially felt that it was enough to cover the job. But it turns out we were I didn’t expect to spend so much time here. The atmosphere is comfortable, the place is nice to sit for a long time, and the work chat which was initially serious slowly turns into a relaxed one. Finally, let’s just move on dinner in the same place.

Because it was already dinner time, we decided to make it second order. This is the part that makes me even more convinced that Omah Kates is really suitable not only as a place to work, but also as a place to eat with friends. The menu choices are clearly friendly for hungry stomachs after a long day at college.

For second order, we ordered these three menus:
Sweet and Sour Gurami
The gourami is crunchy but still tastes of fish meat, then drizzled with fresh sweet and sour sauce. This is the type of menu that is easy for a table to like because it tastes “safe”—savory, sweet, and has a sour sensation that doesn’t make you feel uncomfortable.
Rib Soup
If you need something warm and relaxes your body, this rib soup is really suitable. The sauce is delicious to enjoy slowly, and the ribs make dinner feel more “intentional” after a day of activities.
Merapi Fried Quail Package
This is the most curious and the most complete. In one package, you get lime leaf rice, papaya leaves, and fried quail. The lime leaf rice is fragrant, the papaya leaves are a balance, and the fried quail is delicious—perfect for those who want a really filling dinner.
Price: student pocket friendly
This is an important point. I’m not the type who has to look for a fancy place for every assignment. What I’m looking for: value.
At Omah Kates, the menu feels “reasonable” for students. This means, at a price that is still safe, we can:
- comfortable place
- can sit for a long time
- really filling food
When compared to cafes where sometimes just ordering a drink makes you think twice, Omah Kates is more “sane” for college kids.
Location: not far from Magelang City
For Untidar students, location is important. We want a place that can be reached without any hassle and doesn’t make traveling a big project.

A comfortable place to work because the food is really delicious
What I like is that we came with the initial intention of just doing some work, but in the end we ended up having dinner with a complete menu. For college kids who are bored of “just drinking coffee” in cafes, Omah Kates feels like it could be a more reasonable option: the place is comfortable to stay in for a long time, the food is proper, and the menu is large and suitable for sharing at one table. If you are bored of working in a cafe and want a more “resto-friendly” atmosphere, I recommend it Omah Kates Restaurant.
