Day 10 – Borobudur, my stomach started to get hungry after the tour to Gereja Ayam which was quite tiring but exciting and broadened my horizons. My child is starting to get restless, not only is he hungry but clearly needs a play area so that he can be in a good mood again. It was at that point that I felt I needed a place to eat that could accommodate two things at once: portions that could be shared and a playground that allowed children to freely explore. From several people’s recommendations, we finally headed to Kedai Bukit Rhema, and so our family lunch was filled with a warm portion of grilled chicken at Rhema Bukit Tavern with an open view of nature.
As soon as I got out of the large parking area, I immediately felt that this was the type of place to eat that was really meant for families. The children were immediately attracted to the playground area, while my partner and I slowly looked at the menu and arranged an ordering strategy so we could share one table. Lunch was simple, but felt calmer because the children had their “own world” on the playground, while we could enjoy grilled chicken without having to deal with the drama of hunger and boredom.
Why I Choose Lunch at Kedai Bukit Rhema
Honestly, my expectations at that time were simple: filling lunch, and kid friendly place. After the morning tour to Gereja Ayam, my body was starting to get tired and I didn’t want to gamble with a place to eat that was too narrow or difficult to park.
Several things made me finally choose Kedai Bukit Rhema to try the grilled chicken:
- Location is still in the Borobudur area, so no need to travel far after the tour.
- Playground and natural view So there are two keywords that immediately made me click: children can play, parents can eat while enjoying the view.
- From conversations with several local people, this shop is often mentioned as an option family restaurant area Borobudur which is comfortable for groups.
For those of you who are planning an itinerary Borobudur, a combination Gereja Ayam tour → grilled chicken lunch at Kedai Bukit Rhema This is quite reasonable, especially if you bring small children or come in a large family group.

Experience of Eating Grilled Chicken Kedai Bukit Rhema with Family

Here, the grilled chicken at the Bukit Rhema stall is served in portions that I think are quite ideal for sharing. The chicken pieces are not stingy, the meat looks thick and the skin has caramelized marks from the slowly roasted spices. When I cut it, the meat still looked juicy, not the dry or excessively fibrous type.
The dominant flavors I got:
- Javanese sweet and savory taste, with a balanced touch of saltiness.
- The seasoning feels like it has penetrated the inside of the meat, not just “busy” on the surface.
- When eaten with warm rice and fresh vegetables, there is a fresh combination of vegetables that helps balance the sweet-savory taste of grilled chicken.
For the level of spiciness, you can adjust it yourself using the chili sauce. Usually there will be an option for chili sauce with a more prominent spicy character, while children or those who don’t like spicy food can just enjoy the chicken.
In my opinion, Bukiti Rhema’s grilled chicken is the most suitable to enjoy between noon and evening, when the air starts to warm but not too cold. And indeed, peak times here are usually around 12.00–15.00, so if you come during that time, the atmosphere feels lively: lots of families, the sound of children playing, and busy lunch activities but still feel relaxed.
Sharing Portions and Menus for Children
Because our situation at that time required it sharing portion, I noticed how the plates were arranged on the table when the order came. One portion of grilled chicken can be flexible enough to share, especially if you order several additional side dishes and rice.
Things I like:
- The portion of chicken is reasonable enough to be shared between two people, or to be a “center piece” in the middle of the table for several people with the addition of other side dishes.
- There are menus that are more friendly for children, for example chicken without chili sauce which can be enjoyed with just warm rice. This is very helpful for families who have children with simple tastes.
- You can adjust the fresh vegetables and additions such as chili sauce yourself, so your child can still feel comfortable eating without having to be forced to enjoy too strong a taste.
From the groove side, Order waiting time is around 10–20 minutes when conditions are relatively busy. For me, this is still very reasonable for a family restaurant, especially with children playing for a while on the playground.

Atmosphere, Playground and Natural View that Make You Feel at Home

One of the reasons I’ve stayed here for so long is a combination of natural atmosphere and facilities for children. From the dining table, you can still see the green surrounding area and feel the air which is fresher than the city center.
Some points that I felt immediately:
- Playgrounds be the center of children’s attention. There is enough play area to keep them busy and happy, without having to be constantly at the table.
- Parents can eat at a calmer pace because their children have clear activities, not just sitting staring at a device screen.
- Natural view around the shop gives the feel of a “real holiday”, not just stopping to eat and then rushing to leave.
In total, we spent approx 60–90 minutes here. The time felt right: enough to order, wait, enjoy the food, watch the children playing, and sit back and relax a bit before returning to the accommodation.
Practical Information for Coming to Kedai Bukit Rhema
So that you have a clearer picture, here are some practical notes from my experience:
- Busy Hours
The most crowded is usually at 12.00–15.00, in line with lunch hours and tourist visiting times in the Borobudur and Gereja Ayam areas. - Motorcycle/Car Parking
The parking area wide for customers, and this is important if you come with a family car or group. There is no drama of narrow parking that can bring down the holiday mood. - Visit Duration
On average, if you eat casually while allowing your children to play, prepare some time 1–1.5 hours. For me, this is the ideal duration before continuing other activities. - Since when was it founded?
During this visit, I was more focused on exploring the family’s dining experience and facilities, so I haven’t delved into the details Since when was this shop established?. If you are interested in the story of its founding, you can ask directly when you visit.
Short chat with shop employees
As usual, I took the time to chat briefly with employees, just looking for additional insight that might be useful for those of you who want to come here. More or less, this is the summary of our chat:
- Favorite Kids Menu
According to them, the menu most often ordered by children is usually chicken without chili sauce with warm rice. Some children also like side dishes that taste milder and not too spicy. In essence, they understand that children’s tastes tend to be simple and do not force children to enjoy super hot chili sauce. - Group Reservations
For family group or group, they recommend making a reservation first, especially if you come on a weekend or holiday season. That way, the table can be set, and they can adjust the rhythm of the kitchen so that the food arrives more neatly and doesn’t take too long to wait. - Most Favorite Playground Spot
The playground here is quite a magnet for children. From staff stories, many parents choose tables in a position where they can still supervise their children directly in the play area. So, when you come, you can ask to sit in the area that you think is most suitable for monitoring them. - Sharing Package for Families
Employees also mentioned that there are several popular order arrangements for families, such as a flexible version of the “sharing package”: a combination of grilled chicken, additional side dishes, rice and enough drinks for several people. For those of you who come in small groups, this method of ordering is quite efficient and economical.

Compared to other family restaurants in the Borobudur area
Around Borobudur, that’s pretty much it family restaurant which offers a menu of chicken, fish and home cooking. But in my opinion, Kedai Bukit Rhema has several differentiating points:
- Tourism + Culinary Concept
Because it is still in an area that is often associated with the Gereja Ayam and Borobudur panoramas, the experience of eating here feels integrated with the tourist atmosphere. So it’s not just “stopping eating”, but continuing the journey. - Focus on Family and Children
Not all family restaurants provide this playground that is really utilized. Here, the play facilities feel alive and in use, not just for display. - Sharing Portions and Eating Patterns
The portion and taste of the grilled chicken here is quite suitable as a main menu to be shared, then added to several other menus. For families, this really helps control expenses while keeping eating moments communal.
I will not knock other family restaurants in the Borobudur area, because each has character and advantages. But if the parameters natural views, playground, and the taste of grilled chicken at the Bukit Rhema shop which is safe for many taste buds, Kedai Bukit Rhema is worth considering on your shortlist of places to eat.
Tips for a Comfortable Lunch with Kids Here
To make your experience as smooth as possible, here are some tips from my personal experience:
- Come a little before peak hours
If possible, try to arrive before 12.00. The atmosphere is still quieter, children can immediately explore the playground, and orders usually arrive at a faster pace. - Set Orders for Sharing
Because grilled chicken is flexible enough to share, you can order less first and then add more if it’s still not enough. This helps avoid leaving too much food. - Choose a table near the playground (if you bring children)
Once you arrive, you can ask for a table whose position allows you to comfortably eat while watching your children. This reduces the number of times you have to stand back and forth. - Pay attention to the spicy level for children
Tell employees from the start that there are children who cannot eat spicy food. Usually they will adjust, for example serving chicken with lighter spices for children. - Prepare 60–90 Minutes of Loose Time
Don’t schedule your agenda too tightly after eating here. Give your children space to play and enjoy the natural atmosphere. Vacations feel more relaxed when the schedule is not too tight.
So is it mandatory or not to be on the family list?
If you are planning an itinerary for Borobudur and looking for a place to have lunch after touring Gereja Ayam, Grilled Chicken Kedai Bukit Rhema in my opinion must be on the radar, especially if you:
- Coming with family,
- Need an area wide and don’t make it crowded,
- Want atmosphere comfortable with a playground and calming natural views.
From personal experience, the combination of grilled chicken that tastes safe for many taste buds, a playground that is actually used by children, and ample parking makes our lunch feel much easier and more enjoyable. It’s not just about having a full stomach, but also a moment where children can be content playing, while adults have time to catch their breath and enjoy the holiday.
If one day you go to Borobudur and have an agenda to go to Gereja Ayam, try scheduling lunch here. Who knows, your experience with grilled chicken and the Kedai Bukit Rhema atmosphere will be one of the moments you remember most from your trip to Magelang.
