I was born and raised in Borobudur since 1990. If I flashback, before 2015, in Borobudur there weren’t many choices of Borobudur cafes or places to hang out. Honestly, if you have guests or friends from out of town, you are often confused about where to take them other than eating at a traditional food stall.

But now, the development of Borobudur is very fast. Not only is Candi Borobudur a world tourist destination, but many cool Magelang cafes have also sprung up. So, I want to share my personal experience 5 cafe Borobudur nearest to Candi Borobudur which I think you must try.

1. Kedai Bukit Rhema – Cafe with Nature View & Children’s Playground

If you come to Borobudur with your family or group, Kedai Bukit Rhema must register. This cafe is in the area Gereja Ayam Bukit Rhema, only about 10 minutes from Candi Borobudur.

What makes me like:

  • Mainstay menu Grilled Chicken Bukit Rhema and Cassava Cheese which is really crunchy.
  • Spacious car & bus parking, so groups are safe.
  • Yes playground for children, make the family feel at home.
  • View of the countryside and hills, especially in the afternoon before sunset.

Tips from my experience: Come in the afternoon, order grilled chicken + specialty Borobudur coffee, then enjoy the atmosphere while the children play on the playground. If you come with your partner, go up to the 3rd floor and enjoy the view, chatting with your partner will make your heart feel cooler.

2. Caping Resto Borobudur – Suitable for large groups

Caping Resto Borobudur It is well-known as the main choice for group events. The location is near Candi Borobudur and easy to reach by tourist buses.

Why I recommend:

  • The place is spacious with a traditional feel.
  • Large parking lot, safe for buses.

Tips from me: If you come with a tour group, it’s best to make a reservation first. Usually weekends are quite busy.

3. 6 Langit by Plataran – Cafe with 360° View Borobudur

If you want to experience a luxurious atmosphere with spectacular views, 6 Langit by Plataran was the answer. The location is a bit up the hill, but once you get there you will be amazed.

What’s special:

  • 360 degree view, you can see Borobudur, Mount Merapi, Sumbing, Merbabu, and Andong.
  • Western & local food menu with five star hotel quality.
  • Romantic atmosphere, suitable for a couple’s dinner.

Tips from my experience: Come in the afternoon before sunset, don’t forget to bring your camera because the photos are extraordinarily beautiful.

4. Phuket Borobudur – Cafe with a Thai Touch

If you want a different atmosphere, Phuket Borobudur offers a Thai-style concept. I like stopping here if I want to eat in a semi-resort atmosphere.

Why it’s good to visit:

  • There is a typical Thai menu on the menu but there is also local food.
  • Spacious place with tropical architectural style.
  • The atmosphere is calm, suitable for relaxing or having a long chat.

Tips from me: try their seafood menu. It tastes fresh and is perfect to enjoy while sitting in the outdoor area.

5. Nalendro Cafe Borobudur – Modern Cafe with a Cozy Atmosphere

If you prefer a modern style cafe, Nalendro Cafe Borobudur could be an option. This place is popular among young people and young families.

What makes me feel at home:

  • The interior is modern but still has a Javanese feel.
  • Complete coffee menu, from espresso, cappuccino, to local brewed coffee.
  • There is a choice of snacks and desserts.

Tips from me: suitable for hanging out at night or just having a relaxing coffee after a day of sightseeing in Candi Borobudur.

As a local person who has lived in Borobudur for a long time, I feel proud that there are now many choices of cafes that are comfortable, delicious and suitable for various needs.

If you ask me which is my favorite? I personally go most often Kedai Bukit Rhema because it is suitable for families, children can play, and the food always makes you nostalgic.
